The difference with these excellent DT990 headphones between the FiiO X5 and the Benchmark DAC2 is enormous. You can hear the music with either portable player but with the DAC2 you can hear the performance. It is the difference between, "that's nice" and "WOW!" Back to the DT990s - the comfort is pretty good. Headphones/IEMs I've tested before in no particular order: Senn 598SR, DT 770 250ohm, Sundara, Salnotes Zero, Senn 58X Jubilee, IKKO OH10, Airpod Pro 2, DT990 250ohm, Senn HD560s, and a bunch of consumer stuff like Sony, Bose, Beats, and Skullcandy in my teen years.
The DT 990 PRO has some stiff competition in this category, but manages to come in a very close second place. Realistically, however, the four headphones below with over 10 points would be utterly undescernable from each other. The Ultrasone HFI-2200s had a few issues with distortion, as did the Pioneer SE-A1000s.
This DT990 32ohm in my opinion is Beyer's most versatile and dynamic headphone they have ever produced. It can be used as a portable phone if you wish, with it's low impedance design and super-comfortable structure. The one from Hifiman has sensitivity of 93 db/mW @ 35 Ohm against 96 db/mW @ 250 Ohm of the dt990 (250 Ohm version), so any amp capable of driving the dt990 will also drive the he4xx despite it being a planar. The usual exception: an OTL tube amp will perfectly drive the DT990 but will struggle with the Hifiman.
So if I had to choose between the two I’d go with the 990’s. The 770’s makes my ears quite warm after awhile. kimsk132 • 3 mo. ago.
